The four levels (Balanced, Smart, Strong, Maximum) control the quality used when re-encoding to JPG or WEBP. Since PNG is a lossless format, keeping PNG as the output format won't shrink file size much regardless of the level chosen — pick JPG or WEBP as the output format for a smaller file.
No. Files are compressed locally in your browser using built-in image and PDF rendering APIs — they are not sent to MZ Edits AI or any other server as part of the compression process.
Yes for the compression itself: your files stay on your device. The page does load open-source libraries (pdf.js, pdf-lib) from public CDNs to enable PDF processing — that's app code being downloaded to your browser, not your files being sent out.
Each page is rendered as a flattened image and reassembled into a new, smaller PDF. This works well for image-heavy or scanned PDFs, but it means the compressed file's text is no longer selectable, searchable, or copyable. Keep your original if you need those.
It depends on the original file, its format, and the compression level you choose. After each run you'll see the original size, compressed size, and percentage saved, so you can compare and re-run with a different level if needed.
